2007 AIDA Individual Pool World Championships
Maribor Slovenia - 04/7/2007

 

The 2007 AIDA Individual Pool Freediving World Championships was held in Maribor, Slovenia between 4 July and 8 July 2007. This was an Individual event, Each country had teams of up to 3 people per sex, as well as any wildcards from the top 10 performances of 2006. The competition had 25 countries registering and around 130 athletes, and was one of the biggest pool competitions to date. Australia was represented by Rhys Sweaney, a relative newcomer to the sport, and Ben Noble who has several competitions under his belt.

"It was a superb comp, quite simply absolutely no competition ever can compare to how well this one was organised and run. The quality of the underwater footage was magnificent, live feeds to a huge screen, live commentary, interviews with athletes straight after their performances, and then the performances themselves... it was spectacular. Rhys had a blinder for his first comp, my first DNF was 83m and my first static was 4:47 so to crack 5 minutes and 100m is a big accomplishment, especially for someone who has trouble training where he is located. I knew 135m would have got me 2nd Dynamic Aussie but trust me there wasn't 3m left in me at all, I was lucky to surface when I did. There was a marker at half way but I knew I was at the end when I decided to surface. But in the meantime, that's that for Team Australia. The beers went down extremely well tonight.

  • Constant Weight = depth dive with fins, no change in ballast
  • Static Apnea = breathold lying still in a pool
  • Dynamic Apnea = distance covered underwater in a pool
