2008 Australian Freediving Team Selection

The Australian Freediving Association would like to invite athletes to apply for the 2008 team to compete in the 2008 AIDA Team World Championship. The competition will be held in Sharm El Sheik, on the Red Sea of Egypt between 1-14 September. It is hosted by Apnea Academy Red Sea, the hosts of the successful 2007 Individual World Championships. The disciplines included are Constant Weight, Static and Dynamic. Details of the competition can be found on the official website at :-
http://www.SharmFreedivingWorldChampionship.com.

Any Australians who want to compete need to register their interest with the Australian Freediving Association by no later than 31 May 2008. This can be done by an email to aidaaustralia@yahoo.com.au, with the following details:

* Name
* Date of Birth
* Competition history (if any)
* Personal Bests in Static, Dynamic and Constant Weight (non-competition, ie. training).
* A short description of your freediving history

Please note that this is only an expression of interest and does not mean you must participate, nor does it mean an automatic selection on the team. The early date of 31 May is to ensure that we can provide an adequate selection process as the deadline for registration for the competition is strict. This also allows the athletes to take advantage of cheaper flight and hotel rates. If you think you are interested in going to the competition then please apply!

Interested athletes need to be at least 18 years of age (athletes aged between 16 and 18 can apply but must have written permission from parents/guardians) and be in possession of an Australian passport.

There are a maximum of 3 positions per sex available on the competing team, although a number of reserves are also allowed to enter. Selection will be based initially on demand, if demand exceeds the amount of positions on the team, previous competition experience and training results will be used for selection, with priority given to athletes who have competed in the last 12 months. Training results may need to be verified in front of AIDA officials prior to final selection (this will be organised once we have an idea of numbers). Final team selection will be made by a panel of no less than 3 people. Australian athletes living overseas do not have to qualify in Australia.

Athletes are responsible for paying the entry fee of 200 Euro (AUD$339) to the competition. This includes
- 5 competition days and 4 official training days
- Transfers airport / Club Reef - Sharm Club / airport
- Transfers from/to pool 5 km far from the hotel, with transfers every 30 minutes
- Special T-shirt only for athletes
- Diploma of participation
- Doping test
- The use of oxygen tanks fixed under the platform, at least 4, at a depth of 4m.

If you have any queries please contact the AFA on aidaaustralia@yahoo.com.au, as well as checking http://www.ozfreediving.com/afa/ for any updates.
